Urethral Valves vs. Stenosis of the Urethral Orifice in the Girl
Urethral Valves vs. Stenosis of the Urethral Orifice in the Girl Left picture: The diagnosis is urethral valves in a newborn. Notice the barely visible interruption of contrast at the end of the posterior urethra. As an additional indication for this diagnosis punctuated contrast spots can be seen, lying seemingly outside the bladder, and the irregular boundary of the bladder wall, which in fact corresponds to a bladder hypertrophy with so-called pseudodiverticula. Compare these radiological findings with the inner aspects of a bladder hypertrophy in the picture at the bottom of the same side.
Right picture: This is a rare case of stenosis of the external urethral orifice in a 7-year-old girl. Notice in this picture how the urethra is shorter than in the VCUG´s of the boys, and the other shape of the altogether dilated female urethra which may appear like a pathological posterior urethra in a boy. A similar configuration of the urethra may be seen in the girl in a wide bladder neck anomaly. Left picture: VCUG in a newborn with bladder voiding disorders with elongation and ballooning of the posterior urethra. At the top, parts of the bladder are filled with contrast.
Right picture: VCUG with a severely dilated posterior urethra. There is a sudden change of the calibre at the end of the still visible urethra.
