Minimal Spinal Dysraphism vs. Skin Tag (Tail)

Left picture: In this finding of a male newborn a mininal spinal dysraphism must be excluded in any case. Right picture: In this female infant the skin tag has no possible relation to the spine and to the contents of the spinal channel. Nevertheless, an MRI is recommended prior to excision of the tail for cosmetic reasons, possibly showing additional malformations in cases of such tails.

Left picture: The close-up picture shows a trunk-like appendage of the skin over the sacrum. Right picture: An analogous skin appendage is visible as in the contralateral picture. Yet, the same structure here lies at the inner side of the right buttock.
