Sagittal Synostosis vs. Cephalhematoma, Sagittal Synostosis

Left picture: Again, the diagnosis is a sagittal synostosis in which an undulating contour is often visible mainly in a lateral skull x-ray. Right picture: The diagnosis is a calcified cephalhematoma which is usually seen at this site only when combined with sagittal synostosis.

On the view from the side both children exhibit an undulating contour of the region of the whole vertex. Left picture: Here, the wave-like contour of the vertex is less distinctly visible than on the contralateral picture. Addional lateral x-rays of the skull show the course of the contour more distinctly (not shown here). Right picture: In the picture at the bottom of an ap skull x-ray of an analogous case an osseous zone is visible within the posterior prominence, limited by a sclerotic rim. In addition, signs of a sagittal synostosis are visible, such as a non-recognizable suture at the top, and a parasutural sclerosis at the bottom.
