Cystic Lumbar Mass (Differential Diagnosis as before)
turu_13a_n.jpg and turu_13b_n.jpg: Overview and close-up picture of a 1-month-old boy with a cystic lumbar mass.
At the top of the cystic mass a longitudinal structure is visible; its surface looks like granulation tissue. It is surrounded by a grey-white membrane and at the periphery by a reddish tissue similar to skin.
The diagnosis is lumbar myelomeningocele with the natural course of the pathology including formation of granulation tissue over the medullary plate, cloudiness of the
arachnoid and epithelization at the periphery.
The subarachnoid space is under increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure; therefore, the cele protrudes over the level of the surrounding skin.
