Combined Malformations (Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis)
Survey of an older population of 193 infants with a gastric outlet stenosis and the simultaneously encountered combined malformations.
The hypertrophic pyloric stenosis was combined with a gastroesophageal reflux (the term 'hiatus hernia' was used in the survey) in 16 patients (= 8%) and in 1 patient with an anomaly of intestinal rotation and fixation (= 0.5%).
The numbers tell that a hypertrophic pyloric stenosis may be combined with a primary or secondary gastroesophageal reflux. In case of a secondary reflux it is caused by the hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and disappears following surgery, as does the vomiting. According to these numbers two thirds of the combined cases are such secondary reflux forms.
