Ileus of the Newborn (Hirschsprung´s Disease)
Upright abdomen x-ray in a 2-day-old newborn. Multiple air-fluid levels and enormously dilated intestinal loops filled with air are visible, extending to the lower abdomen.
The diagnosis is a low obstructive ileus in a newborn. The involvement of the whole intestine, the enormous air accumulation, and the absence of a segment with maximum dilatation are signs of a neonatal ileus in Hirschsprung's disease, not of a rectoanal malformation or a rare colonic atresia. In addition, the anus of this patient has a normal configuration.
