Disproportion (Gastroschisis)
View from the left body side in an 1-day-old girl. Large bundle of intestine lying outside of the abdominal cavity. The umbilical cord has been flapped to the left side of the patient.
In this case of gastroschisis the visible parts of the intestine are particularly large due to dilatation and sticking together. Compare the antero-posterior diameter of the retracted belly with the sagittal diameter of the intestinal bundle. The case illustrates
especially clearly the disproportion between the actual capacity of the peritoneal cavity and the volume of the intestine assigned for reduction; therefore, an different procedure must be chosen for the reduction.
