Clinical Presentation (Omphalocele)
Cystic mass in a 1-day-old girl from which the umbilical cord originates. The latter has a temporary clamp.
In contrast to gastroschisis the intestinal loops do not lie uncovered outside the
abdominal wall. The abdominal skin runs in a several centimeters large and rounded zone into a scarcely transparent envelope the size of a tennis ball and this covering eccentrically into the umbilical cord. Within the 'umbilical cord hernia' intestinal loops are recognizable in the caudal half, and a parenchymatous organ in the cranial half.
The diagnosis is omphalocele.
