Retrognathia (Pierre Robin Sequence)
In every cleft palate the profile of the face has to be observed. In this case of a newborn a retrognathia and hypoplasia of the lower jaw is visible and palpable. Together with a cleft palate (which is rarely absent) the diagnosis of a Pierre Robin sequence can be made.
Such infants have difficulties with breathing and eating, and often other pathologies.
They must be evaluated in a tertiary center immediately after birth, and if necessary, hospitalized.
In isolated Pierre Robin sequence the alleviation of the respiratory distress (prone
position, nasopharyngeal tubus or glossopexy) is the requirement for a normal feeding.
