Umbilical Hernia vs. Omphalocele

Left picture: This finding corresponds to an umbilical hernia. Right picture: Here, an abortive omphalocele is present. It was justified to ligate the cord not centrally at the site of the small protrusion because the content of the omphalocele must be reduced and the abdominal wall defect closed by open surgery.

In both cases a pathology of the navel is present. One child is a 1-day-old newborn; the other an older neonate. Right picture: The residual of the umbilical cord is still present, and the reddish discolored small protrusion is not yet epithelialized. Left picture: The swelling is arranged in a caudal direction like a snout and distinctly epithelialized.
