Mastitis vs. Breast Enlargement

Left picture: The diagnosis is a mastitis of the newborn; which is often unilateral. Right picture: The diagnosis is a physiological enlargement mainly of the left breast, which is in general bilateral, and may persist beyond the neonatal period.

In both pathologies there is an enlargement of the mammary gland(s). Left picture: This patient is a newborn. Right picture: This patient is a female infant. In addition to the age, the two pathologies of the children differ in the following: Left picture: The skin over the enlargement is reddened. Right picture: The skin is non-irritant; a pigment nevus is recognizable on the lateral chest wall and on the upper belly.
